ADVENTURES OF ONE INDIAN GIRL ON A SOLO EURO TRIP

(AS  TOLD TO THE SELFIE BEAUTY)

This is an inspiring story about Shilpa Baburaj, a young professional in her mid- twenties. She did something which we ALL want to do: she went on an awesome SOLO EURO TRIP. Many might wet their pants thinking about roaming in an unknown city within India. But not Shilpa, she explored an entire continent and came back with ever lasting memories and the CRAZIEST stories.

At her previous company, Shilpa had repeated encounters with a horrible boss.  This particular boss would demoralize and put her down at every opportunity.  The nasty environment and the dog eat dog corporate culture did not help either.  To make matters worse, Shilpa was also going through an emotional turbulent time in her personal life. She put on a brave face at office, but her nights were spent crying till the wee hours of morning.  The situation in her professional and personal life gave birth of a lot of self doubt and self esteem issues. Confidence was at an all time low. She kept wondering if something is wrong with her. Didn’t she deserve happiness?  Why her?

Shilpa knew she needed to make some drastic changes. To begin with, she quit her soul sucking job. Then she decided to use her savings towards what would become the MOST EPIC TRIP OF HER LIFE. Shilpa Baburaj went on an 18 day solo trip to 5 countries: GERMANY, ITALY,FRANCE, SPAIN & NETHERLANDS.  Here are some defining moments that changed her perspective for LIFE:

CREEPED OUT IN BARCELONA

Shilpa got really creeped out after she used an app called Couchsurfing. Couchsurfing is a service that lets travelers find accommodation free of cost. A seemingly decent guy Marko, who lives with his girlfriend in Barcelona, offered to host her. He went to pick her up and they were travelling back by subway.  Soon enough, Marko started flirting with her. He told her how beautiful she is and he never knew Indian women were so gorgeous.  Shilpa started getting very uncomfortable as the man’s intentions became clearer. He then told her that he had asked his girlfriend not to disturb them tonight so he could spend time with “exotic  Shilpa”.  As soon as the train stopped at the next station, she bolted out.

BUT BARCELONA WAS NOT SO BAD…..

Barcelona seemed right out of a Bollywood set: extravagant, flamingo dance shows, & high on energy. Everyone seemed genuinely happy and at peace with themselves. Shilpa received heartwarming smiles from strangers which made her realize that perhaps nothing was wrong with her after all.  It’s in Barcelona she realized that every moment is an opportunity to start again. Anytime you can wipe your slate clean by CHOOSING to let go of the negativity and the pain.

LOST IN WATER-WORLD VENICE

Just like some people can’t wrap their head around mathematics, Shilpa sucks at navigation & her sense of direction is virtually non-existent. She will think long and hard to differentiate between  RIGHT and LEFT. So she really freaked out when she lost her way back to her hostel! In maze like Venice with water canals as streets, this was a ridiculously stressful situation. After a boat ride & two hours of frantically trying to find the correct route, she made it back.  Achieving this feat, despite being navigationally challenged, restored her self confidence.

SLEEPING UNDER THE STARS IN AMSTERDAM:

All hostels were booked to full capacity when she arrived in Amsterdam. Shilpa had to spend one night sleeping at the central station in the freezing cold. She was not the only one spending the night out in the open, other youngsters in the same predicament dozed off next to her.

JUST DO IT & ENJOY YOURSELF: That is Shilpa’s advise to everyone who is planning a solo trip. What gave her pain initially prompted her to embark on a fantastic adventure.  She has come back stronger, wiser & with some really cool stories to boast of.
